Cafe Imports + Costa Rica<\/h2>\n

Since Cafe Imports bought its first container of Costa Rican microlots at the end of the 2006\/2007 harvest, the country has become a model for our buying relationships around the world. In Costa Rica, producers separate top lots from more standard coffees, they sell the lots at corresponding prices, and thereby gain individual recognition for their work and quality. This approach has caused ripple effects around the country. Every year, more producers express an interest in improving the picking, sorting, and processing in hopes of earning better prices and achieving greater market visibility. <\/span>We have a core set of micro-producers and cooperative partners whose coffees are the standard-bearers for our Costa Rica offerings, but we are always meeting new producers, creating connections that result in some of the most exciting, innovative, and delicious coffees that the country has to offer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Costa Rica contributes less than 1% of the world\u2019s coffee production, yet it has a strong reputation for producing good to mild quality. One way that Costa Rica has hoped to differentiate itself among coffee-growing nations is through the diversity of profiles in its growing regions, despite the country\u2019s relatively small geographical size. Tarraz\u00fa might be the most famous of the regions. Its high altitudes contribute to its coffee\u2019s crisp acidity. The West Valley has a high percentage of Cup of Excellence winners, and grows an abundance of both the Costa Rica\u2013specific varieties Villa Sarchi and Villa Lobos, as well as some of the more \u201cexperimental\u201d varieties like SL-28 and Gesha. Tres R\u00edos coffee has a smooth, milder profile\u2014perhaps more \u201ceasy drinking\u201d with toffee sweetness and soft citrus than the more complex or dynamic Costas available. Central Valley has some of the most distinct weather patterns in the country, with well-defined wet and dry seasons. We have found some of the best natural processed coffees in this region.<\/span><\/p>\n

ASMUCAF\u00c9, ARGCAFEE, and FUDAM<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

If there\u2019s one myth worth dismantling in coffee, it\u2019s the belief that coffee is \u201cman\u2019s work.\u201d Millions of women grow, pick, deliver, sort, cup, and sell coffee\u2014and that\u2019s an abridged list. Women in coffee production face specific obstacles that are the result of gender bias. According to the World Bank, \u201cWomen in half of the countries in the world are unable to assert equal land or property rights despite legal protections,\u201d and countless women in the producing world have the three full-time jobs of being the sole caretakers of farm, family, and homestead.<\/p>\n

Through our relationship with Banexport in Colombia, we work with three women producer organizations: ASMUCAF\u00c9, ARGCAFEE, and FUDAM.<\/p>\n

Las Lajas<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oscar and Francisca Chacon of Las Lajas Micromill are third-generation coffee producers who are committed to quality and innovation and are probably best known for being among the first to produce honey coffees in Costa Rica. Their micromill was the first to produce Naturals and Honeys in response to a 2008 earthquake that eliminated their access to fresh water. Since that time, the couple has perfected these processes, creating a range of coffees whose profile is dependent on the drying curve, which Oscar likes to be as slow and long as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cerro San Luis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cerro San Luis Micromill is a family business run by two siblings and their spouses, who own and operate both farms and a small mill in Grecia, in the West Valley.\u00a0 In the interest of improving their quality and remaining competitive, they have focused on growing different varieties. About four years ago, they replaced their older stock with 10 or more different varieties, including Caturra, Red and Orange Bourbon, SL-28, Catuai, Villa Sarchi, and Maragogype.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ICAFE<\/strong><\/p>\n

El Instituto del Caf\u00e9 (ICAFE) was founded in 1933 to promote and support the coffee industry in Costa Rica. It stands as one of Central America\u2019s best-organized and furthest-reaching national coffee associations and is funded by an export tax on all the coffee that leaves the country.\u00a0<\/span>ICAFE devotes considerable energy to studying and experimentation. The lab researches coffee varieties, water, soil, pruning methods, shade, plague control, minerals, and carbon emissions and runs soil and water analysis tests for mills and producers. <\/span><\/p>\n
