Coffee finds a way&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Intro&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If there\u2019s one thing we\u2019ve learned these past few months, it\u2019s that coffee will\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">most definitely\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">find a way.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Along with our producer partners, we\u2019ve learned to adapt to Zoom to meetings rather than zoom from place to place on airplanes, and we\u2019ve found other ways to stay in touch and even cup together (apart). In fact, we\u2019ve been able to find a lot of joy\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from seeing friendly faces on our screens\u2014especially when they have good news to share.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; src=&#8221;\/\/cdn.cafeimports.com\/images\/Cafe_Imports_Peru-1-9.jpg&#8221; \/][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Piero &amp; Rony&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recently, we were able to catch up with Rony Lavan, the cofounder and president of Lima Coffees, a grower\u2019s association that represents 800 smallholder farmers in Per<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00fa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019s Cajamarca department that has become our strongest partner for coffees from Per<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00fa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014and wow, were we happy to see him and hear about this year\u2019s harvest, which is wrapping up now.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Piero &amp; Rony&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0time I visited was around September of last year. We miss each other<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">!<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d says Piero Cristiani, senior green-coffee buyer for Caf<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Imports, who handles sourcing from Per\u00fa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and who joined in the conversation with Rony over Zoom<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe definitely miss traveling and seeing our coffee friends, our coffee partners. It\u2019s been very different but communicating and chatting through WhatsApp and e-mail, that\u2019s how it\u2019s been.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_image _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; src=&#8221;\/\/cdn.cafeimports.com\/images\/Cafe_Imports_Peru-1-7.jpg&#8221; align=&#8221;center&#8221; max_width=&#8221;80%&#8221; \/][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Piero &amp; Rony&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Piero and Rony know each other from back before Piero was a buyer, when Rony was a master cupper with another organization in Per\u00fa. They have stayed in close contact ever since, and Piero has been a huge supporter of Lima Coffees from the beginning, typically at least a couple times every year.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Of course, 2020 has had different ideas\u2014for everyone.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Pandemic &amp; Good News&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBecause of the pandemic, everyone has been quite concerned,\u201d Rony says, translated from Spanish. \u201cLittle by little, we have been adapting and obviously watching over, implementing all of the protocols for biosecurity, caring for our employees, taking care of our producers. And it worked, we have not stopped: We continued working to be able to fulfill these goals in 2020. Thanks to God, all is good, and everyone is good.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Pandemic &amp; Good News&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Good news is such a relief these days, and thankfully there was more to come: The weather mercifully cooperated with the coffee harvest, which should translate to fantastic coffees in the cup. Rony says that there was less rain than last year, which has led to both higher overall cup scores from their quality control team, as well as more opportunities to do experimentation with processes and fermentation.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe producers are happy with their coffees, with their quality,\u201d he says, and he thinks that the silver lining of Per\u00fa\u2019s travel restrictions earlier this year contributed to some of that growth\u2014though, of course, it wasn\u2019t easy. (Spoiler alert: It\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">never<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0easy.)\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_image _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; src=&#8221;\/\/cdn.cafeimports.com\/images\/Cafe_Imports_Peru-1-11.jpg&#8221; align=&#8221;center&#8221; max_width=&#8221;92%&#8221; \/][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Pandemic &amp; Good News&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW59499211 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59499211 BCX9\">While many farmers in Cajamarca rely on pickers who come from other parts of the country to harvest coffee, this year there was a ban on interdepartmental travel, which meant that farmers needed to\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW59499211 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59499211 BCX9\">rely on themselves and their families to collect the coffee. For some, that meant spending large amounts of time in their own fields for the first time in a while, allowing\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW59499211 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59499211 BCX9\">them to pay close attention to ripeness and selectivity, to take extra care of the plants, and to feel better organized with their crops.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW59499211 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59499211 BCX9\">While early reports in the coffee sector predicted as much as 30 percent drop in yields due to labor shortages, Rony says that Lima Coffee\u2019s producers actually\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW59499211 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59499211 BCX9\">only a 5 percent decrease\u2014and scores in the upper 80s, so far.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW59499211 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_image _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; src=&#8221;\/\/cdn.cafeimports.com\/images\/Cafe_Imports_Peru-1-12.jpg&#8221; \/][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_image _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; src=&#8221;\/\/cdn.cafeimports.com\/images\/Cafe_Imports_Peru-1-10.jpg&#8221; \/][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Lima Coffees Growing&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe have grown a lot in the number of producers, too. We started\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">[in 2016]\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with 300 producers, and year after year the Lord sends more producers, because they see the excellent opportunity to become part of the project. And getting better year after year\u2014improving quality and also improving their quality of life,\u201d Rony says.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">His goal for next year is to work with 1,000 smallholders, and to expand Lima Coffee\u2019s representation within new regions to provide more opportunities for farmers to access the specialty-coffee market.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the ways Lima Coffees seeks to ensure those opportunities for farmer members is by investing in infrastructure, specifically to aid with fermentation and drying. Rony says that in the first years of Lima Coffees\u2019 existence about 30 percent of the producers had\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fermentation and drying equipment that would allow them to focus on specialty coffee; as of this year, he says that figure is 80 percent, and growing.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe great advantage we have is to have committed producers who are satisfied with us and with the organization<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d he says.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We have many tasks in mind: exploring new areas,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">focus on the microlots, and we already have a project to have a home for ourselves\u201d\u2014a new, modern office and laboratory where Lima Coffees can see the workers, see the coffee loaded and unloaded, and build a deeper relationship with the coffee they love.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; src=&#8221;\/\/cdn.cafeimports.com\/images\/Cafe_Imports_Peru-1-8.jpg&#8221; \/][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Our Offerings&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.7&#8243; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our offerings from Per\u00fa, which largely come through Rony and his network of producer associates, reflects the great range of diversity and qualities that Cajamarca has to offer. Regional Selects from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">districts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0like San Ignacio, Chirinos, Huabal, and San Jos\u00e9 de Lourdes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not only allow us to really\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">home in on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0differences in terroir and producer style, but also allow us to identify truly exceptional lots and recognize the producers with microlots.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Usually when I visit we cup almost every day when we don\u2019t go out to the farms<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d Piero says of his sourcing collaborations with Lima Coffees.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But I think in general we\u2019ve been working with Rony for such a long time that he knows the quality that we like and the quality this year has been very good.
