India is famous not only for its Monsooned coffees, but also for its production of Robusta: a species of coffee which contains quite the caffeine of Arabica, and is most commonly used in espresso blends for its ability to contribute a substantial head of crema. Robusta is a hardier coffee species than Arabica, and tends to grow better at lower altitudes; it is also very pest- and disease-resistant, due in part to its high caffeine content. It does not have a great flavor, but it is an inexpensive blend component with longstanding tradition.
